It was a beautiful morning in Hallstatt, when the gentle sunshine danced upon the shores of the lake, the birds chirped melodiously in the trees, and the flowers swayed gracefully in the soft breeze. Everything seemed to be wrapped in a peaceful enchantment, as though the world itself had stepped out of a fairy tale. The cheerful laughter of a little girl named Clara echoed through every corner of the garden.

Clara was the youngest and only sister of two brothers, Elias and Rowan. Their love for her was beyond measure, and they could hardly bear to see a single tear fall from her eyes. She was a dreamy child, fascinated by fairy tales, enchanted forests, and magical creatures that existed only in the pages of books—or so everyone believed.

Every night, before Clara went to sleep, her brothers would sit beside her bed and narrate stories of fairies who visited sleeping children, leaving tiny gifts beneath their pillows. And every morning, without fail, Clara would discover a little surprise waiting for her.

Sometimes it was a ribbon, sometimes a wooden doll, and sometimes a tiny flower carefully wrapped in paper.

“Oh, Elias! Rowan!” she would exclaim, her eyes sparkling with delight. “The fairy has visited me again! I knew she wouldn't forget me!”

Her brothers would exchange secret smiles.

“Of course she wouldn't,” Elias would reply, brushing a strand of hair from Clara's forehead. “You are her favourite little girl.”

“But how does she enter the house without waking me?” Clara once asked suspiciously.

“Fairies know secrets that ordinary people do not,” Rowan answered, struggling to suppress his laughter.

Clara believed every word.

To her, the world was not merely a place of trees, lakes, and mountains. It was a kingdom of endless possibilities, where magic waited behind every flower and mystery slept beneath every shadow.

But one morning, something happened that would change her understanding of the world forever.

While playing in the garden, Clara noticed a butterfly resting upon a white rose. Its delicate wings shimmered with the colours of the rainbow, glowing as though someone had captured the evening sky and painted it upon them.

Fascinated by its beauty, she followed it beyond the garden, deeper into the woods. When she finally stopped, she realised that she could no longer see her home.

“Elias! Rowan!” she cried, but only silence answered.

Suddenly, the butterfly settled upon the window of an abandoned cottage. Clara approached cautiously and pushed open the creaking door. Inside, she discovered an old photograph of a woman holding a baby, with two little boys standing beside her. The woman looked strangely familiar.

It was her mother, who had died when Clara was very young.

Beside the photograph lay a letter.

My dearest Clara,

If you ever find this letter, remember that love never truly disappears. Sometimes, it returns in ways we cannot understand.

Forever yours,

Mama.

Clara held the letter against her chest, tears filling her eyes. Suddenly, an old woman appeared in the doorway.

“You have your mother's eyes,” she whispered.

“Who are you?” Clara asked fearfully.

“Someone who has waited a long time for you.”

Before Clara could ask another question, she heard her brothers calling her name. She rushed outside, where Elias and Rowan embraced her with relief.

“There was a woman inside!” Clara exclaimed. “She knew Mama!”

Her brothers exchanged frightened glances.

“Clara,” Rowan whispered, “that cottage has been abandoned for twenty years. No one lives there.”

“But I saw her!”

They returned home, leaving Clara confused and frightened.

That night, as Clara lay in bed, she felt something beneath her pillow. It was a tiny silver butterfly with rainbow-coloured wings.

She hurried to Elias.

“Did you leave this for me?”

He shook his head, his face turning pale.

For the first time, neither brother had an explanation.

Clara looked towards the open window. Outside, a woman stood beneath the moonlight, smiling gently at her. Before Clara could call out, the woman vanished, leaving only a rainbow-winged butterfly fluttering in the darkness.

Clara pressed the silver butterfly against her heart.

Perhaps it had been a dream. Perhaps grief had created an illusion. Or perhaps some mysteries were never meant to be explained.

From that day onwards, whenever Clara saw a rainbow-winged butterfly, she smiled and whispered, “I know you're there, Mama.”

And the butterfly would flutter its wings, as though answering her.
