I was someone who had never liked being alone. I loved the company of people, the warmth of conversations, and the happiness that came from sharing little moments with others. Having studied in an environment where I had many friends and a wonderful bond with my teachers, I was accustomed to feeling surrounded by people. Even at home, living in a joint family meant that I always had someone to talk to. Solitude was something I had never desired.
Everything changed when I started college in September 2022. I entered this new phase of life with countless expectations, believing that college would be the best time of my life. I imagined making wonderful friends, enjoying every moment, and creating memories that I would cherish forever. For me, enjoying college life meant having good friends by my side.
However, despite my efforts to make friends, I could not find the genuine companionship I longed for. We had six subjects, and each required us to move to a different classroom. I wished for a friend who would accompany me from one class to another, share conversations along the way, and sit with me in the university grounds after lectures. Weeks passed, then months, but the companionship I had hoped for remained absent.
Watching others laugh and walk together made me increasingly aware of my own loneliness. I had always disliked silence, and now I found myself spending hours without anyone to talk to. After lectures, I would go to the university grounds alone, wishing I had someone with whom I could share snacks, stories, and laughter. Little did I know that those solitary moments would gradually change my perspective on life.
Whenever I sat surrounded by trees and greenery, something within me began to settle. The gentle breeze, the quiet atmosphere, and the beauty of nature brought me a sense of relief. In that silence, I began to experience something I had never expected: the presence of God.
I realised that even when no one was walking beside me, I was never truly alone. There was Someone who never abandoned me, Someone whose love remained constant regardless of my circumstances. I began to feel that God was walking with me at every step, offering comfort when I needed it most.
Slowly, the free lectures and the time I once dreaded became moments I cherished. I started reading His Word, and its promises filled my heart with joy and peace. The silence that had once made me feel empty now gave me space to reflect, pray, and grow closer to Him.
Looking back, I realise that I entered college searching for happiness in friendships, unaware that my journey would lead me towards a deeper relationship with God. I had mistaken being alone for being abandoned, never imagining that solitude could become a source of comfort.
Perhaps the greatest lesson I learned was that being alone does not necessarily mean being lonely. Sometimes, life takes us away from the familiar so that we can discover something far more meaningful within the unfamiliar.
I had once feared the very moments that eventually brought me peace. I thought I was walking alone, but I was learning to recognise the One who had never left my side.
